Early Reading and Phonics

At St Margaret's we strive to ensure that not only will all children learn to read but that they also develop a love of reading. We want reading to be a joyful experience for them which will impact positively on their whole lives.

We are currently in the process of adopting 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds' and aim to have this new scheme fully implemented by the end of December 2021. Phonics will be supported by a new reading scheme - Collins Big Cat. These books will enable children to practise their phonics skills at school and bring the books home showing what expert readers they are. In addition, children will bring home a book from the library to share with you and 'read for pleasure'.

We will be holding a meeting for parents of children in EYFS and Key Stage 1 on Wednesday 1st December at 6pm to give more detailed information about the changes to reading. We hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join us. In the meantime, if you would like to have further information then please click on the link below where there are a wealth of resources to support with phonics and early reading at home.
